Golden Milk Recipe

I first learned about this Golden Milk recipe in my very first yoga teacher training in 2014; we were practicing Ashtanga for sometimes 4 hours a day, 5 days a week, and at one point I could barely move my arms. I asked one of my teachers what to do about the soreness, and she put her hands on my exhausted shoulders and said “make some Golden Milk, drink a little every night” and smiled like she had just shared a major secret with me…. (and boy did she ever!!)

As the tonic began to boil I remember realizing why it was called golden milk (the turmeric mixed with the coconut milk creates the most beautiful vibrant gold color!) but I also remember watching the chunks of root swirling around in the pot wondering how in the world this odd mix of ingredients was going to make me feel better.. but low and behold.. it worked wonders!

Turmeric has natural and powerful anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used medicinally for over 4,000 years! Curcumin, the main active ingredient in turmeric, has been a staple in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries because of its ability to help the body in major ways. It is excellent for arthritis, digestion, the immune system, and even serious physical illnesses.

I have experienced first hand just how effective turmeric can be for relieving joint and muscle pain. I should also mention, I have read that turmeric is also great for relief from gas, bloating, and indigestion. Ginger, another ingredient in golden milk, is great for combating nausea and soothing stomach aches; as well as helping the immune system due to its antimicrobial properties. This liquid gold elixir is not only amazing for the body, but tastes amazing too.

 What You’ll Need:
1 cup unsweetened non-dairy milk, preferably organic coconut milk or almond milk
1 cinnamon stick
1 piece of turmeric thinly sliced
1 piece ginger, unpeeled, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon honey (optional)
1 tablespoon virgin coconut oil
1/4 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
Ground cinnamon
*This Golden Milk recipe makes 2 cups
    1. Whisk coconut milk, cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, honey, coconut oil, peppercorns, and 1 cup water in a small saucepan; bring to a low boil.
    2. Reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.
    3. Strain and top with ground cinnamon
    4. Best served warm! But you can also keep this glorious tonic in the refrigerator for up to 5 days
