Hi tribe! If you read my last blog post Hormones: The 411 then you know by now I have been very focused on balancing my hormones and detoxing my life of anything that may be contributing to my hormonal imbalance. I’m no doctor, but from what I have read a hormonal imbalance like I am experiencing usually doesn’t just occur from one or two small contributors… with that being said I have a feeling mine is the result of many different things that I have repeatedly done over a long period of time, some of which I go into detail about in Hormones: The 411.
If your hormones are generally pretty balanced then using a product or consuming food/drink (on occasion) that is listed under the hormonal disruptors in Hormones: The 411 may not have a huge impact on your hormonal health (although I do think you should try your best to avoid using/consuming anything that contains any of the chemicals listed as no no’s!!) .. but for someone like me who’s hormones are WAY out of whack it is certainly not going to help me heal my hormones by continuing habits or using products that may be harmful to my hormonal balance; which is why I finally decided it was time for me to make the switch to 100% non-toxic makeup. I sorta-kinda started to do this last year but I didn’t purge everything, some of the makeup I was still using was not totally non-toxic which I didn’t think was that big of a deal, but since I have been battling with hormonal acne since March and I have been doing all of the things in my power to rid myself of it but it is STILL HERE AND (unfortunately) THRIVING (ugh) I decided it was worth a try to make the switch to non-toxic makeup to see if it helps.
Like I said above, I didn’t think using a few “possibly toxic” products would be that big of a deal, but when my acne was still persisting I decided to review everything I was doing and realized the “possibly toxic” makeup I was still using may be the very thing that is stinting my healing process.. and hey you know what? Maybe it’s not… BUT.. maybe it is.. so it’s worth a try!
Our skin is our largest organ, and the skin is very porous, so we should be paying better attention to what we are putting on it because eventually it will be absorbed by the skin and in our bodies!! Believe it or not there are A LOT of products (even some that claim to be “all natural”) that contain endocrine-disruptors, which are various chemicals that can harm your hormones, your brain, your reproductive system..basically your whole body. These products seep into our skin and can cause imbalances which can create many different symptoms, some symptoms may be more immediate- but they can also create temporarily silent symptoms which build over time that may appear further down the line as bigger issues. At this point in my life it is well worth the time, money and energy to make the switch not just with my makeup, but in all areas I am able to control in order to avoid future disease or infertility issues. I am a big believer that health=wealth, and in my opinion, it’s a lot easier to take preventative measures now VS fighting off serious health issues later on.
I know it can feel extremely overwhelming to even just *think* about going 100% non-toxic.. at least for me it was. In all honesty, the changes I have made thus far didn’t happen over night (although you could if you’re ready- to each his own ya know!); I have made little changes here and there along my wellness journey and I feel like doing a little at a time makes it less overwhelming! Also, a good rule of thumb is shoot for 80/20. Do your best to stay non toxic 80% of the time but know that in this day in age it will be nearly impossible to be non-toxic 100% of the time.. so give yourself a little grace!
To make the switch to on-toxic makeup I took a trip to my favorite non-toxic beauty mecca, The Detox Market and got to hangout with the head of content/head makeup artist Merrady! We talked non-toxic makeup, picked out new items for my makeup kit and she showed me how to use everything! To see the full interview and makeup look be sure to check out the youtube video!
One of the biggest reasons I love and trust The Detox Market is their personal standards for the products they sell – you can read their ingredient standards list by clicking here.
Merry was fantastic and introduced me to a lot of awesome products, some of which I ended up buying, but I also cruised The Detox Market and tried out some different things to see what works best for me! All of the products Merrady used on me are listed in the description box of the YouTube video, but below is the full list of items I ended up going with!
Here are all of the products that are now in my new non-toxic makeup kit as well as how/where I use them! I included clickable links so you can shop for each product easily!! 🙂
FACE:
**Before applying any makeup I do my entire skincare routine to prep my skin, you can see what I am currently using for non-toxic skincare in my blog post Healing My Skin Part 1 !
Sappho Liquid Foundation: I absolutely LOVE this foundation, I just put a pump or 2 in my hands and apply to my face using my hands- it goes on super evenly and it adds a great sheer layer of light coverage that covers just enough to make me feel confident about the acne scars/pigmentation I am still working on healing. If I am just going out with friends or teaching I will just do this foundation!
Kjaer Weis Foundation: If I am looking for a little more coverage I add this on top of the Sappho foundation. I LOVE this foundation as it is super lightweight but very build-able, so if I am experiencing active breakouts its great as I can layer it and build! To apply it I use a tapping method Merrady taught me using the Kjaer Weis blush brush!
W3LL PEOPLE Bio Tint Multi-Action Moisturizer: I loooove this tinted moisturizer so so much, I have actually been using this one for a while, this is one of the products I brought into my makeup kit when I was sorta-kinda making the switch and it’s definitely one I am keeping. It’s very sheer but still decent coverage and has SPF 30 in it! I also love that this line is very affordable. I usually prefer not to wear makeup when working out but I love putting this on if I feel like I need a little some something to even out my skin tone or if I am going to a workout event!
Sappho Concealer: For under my eyes! I use a damp beauty blender to tap it into place 🙂
W3LL PEOPLE Bio Brightener Powder: I like to use the “universal glow” powder to set the concealer under my eyes!
W3LL PEOPLE Altruist Mineral Foundation Powder: If I am shooting or going out and I am doing a full makeup look I will set either the tinted moisturizer or foundation with this foundation powder just to add another natural looking layer to conceal breakouts. It also helps matte-ify the foundation if I am looking super shiny ( I prefer a matte look with some glow VS a slippery shiny look) I use a kabuki brush to apply this powder!
W3LL PEOPLE Bio Bronzer Powder: This is another product that I have been using for a while I absolutely LOVE the healthy glow it gives me!! I actually use this as a “contouring” powder (I don’t really contour like the beauty bloggers do lol but I try a little!) I sometimes even use this on my eyelids as I love the color!! A little bit goes a long way to use it sparingly! Also- I use a kabuki brush after I apply it to blend it in for a more natural look!
W3LL PEOPLE Nudist Multi Use Powder Duo: FAVORITE BLUSH OF ALL TIME!!!!!
EYES:
Cocokind Highlighter Set: This set comes with 3 different highlighter and I really love them all. I love using them on my eyelids and to line under my brow to add a little brightness! I don’t really wear much eye shadow as I prefer a natural look so this is perfect for that!
W3LL PEOPLE Hypnotist Eye Pencil: I really don’t wear eyeliner that often but I wanted to have some on hand in case I felt the urge to! I got it in black 🙂
Sappho Vegan Mascara and W3LL PEOPLE Expressionist Mascara: I love both of these mascaras and basically just switch between the 2 depending on my mood 😉
Plume Brow Pomade: Perfect for filling in my oh so blonde and sparse brows!
Should I do a makeup tutorial using all of my new non-toxic makeup products on IGTV?! Let me knoooooow in a comment below! Also, as usual if you have any questions you can leave me a comment below! I’m happy to help you during your switch to non-toxic makeup in any way that I can 🙂 OH, speaking of which: if you shop on TheDetoxMarket.com you can use NAMASTSHAY10 at check out for 10% off your purchase!
