Daily Detox Rituals: Hot Water + Lemon + Cayenne

This cayenne lemon detox is guaranteed to put a little pep in your step before you start your day.. not to mention it’s packed with so many health benefits! One of the first things I do in the morning is have a cup of hot water with organic lemon juice and cayenne. I love starting my morning off with this,  I can’t live without it! And in case you were wondering; YES, I actually drink this BEFORE my daily morning green juice….that I also can’t live without 🙂

Lemon water is an Ayurvedic ritual. In Ayurveda it is believed that the first thing you ingest sets the tone for the rest of the day. Both lemon juice and cayenne pepper both have anti-fungal, detoxifying and immune boosting properties. Lemon is a natural detoxifier, the vitamin C in lemon juice can transform any toxins that reside in the body into digestible material. Lemons are also packed with antioxidants and electrolytes including potassium, calcium and magnesium. Lemon is also known to stimulate the liver’s natural enzymes by helping to oxygenate the body and can also help neutralize the body’s pH level by making it more alkaline. pH imbalance has been attributed to numerous disorders in the body, as well as chronic illness. I know that my body is naturally highly acidic which is why I drink mostly alkaline water and why I always try to be mindful about doing things that will help naturally balance out my pH levels.

Now you’re probably wondering about the cayenne pepper… cayenne pepper stimulates the circulatory system; opening the capillaries and believe it or not – aids in digestion. It also increases the temperature of your body thus kickstarting your metabolism, which is why it’s great to drink this first before anything else goes in your body. I also love putting cayenne on my avocado toast and just about anything else that I can, I love a little spicy kick that is also good for my body!

I prefer to use fresh squeezed lemon juice for my cayenne lemon detox, but I don’t always have the time to do that in the mornings, so as I backup I always keep a bottle of Santa Cruz Organic Lemon Juice in the fridge! In a standard sized mug I put about 1/4 cups of organic lemon juice + a dash of organic chili cayenne powder, and then I fill the rest of the mug with hot alkaline water that I boil in my tea kettle on the stove.

It might sound like an odd combination, but I find it quite good; and after drinking it for so long I actually look forward to it in the morning! The more goodness you give your body, the more your body will start to crave it!

This sounds so perfect! Especially that I am so stressed and exhausted from work lately. But I have a question. How do you mix in the cayenne pepper? Do you use the grounded (powdery) cayenne pepper and just put it in the hot water and stir? And how much of the pepper do you usually use?

Hi Jana! Thanks so much for stopping by + reading! To answer your question: I use an organic cayenne pepper I bought at Whole Foods, it is the powdered kind found in the spice isle. I usually use about 0.125 US teaspoons (that’s half of 1/4 of a teaspoon) I don’t measure mine out anymore, but I eyeball it! I heat my water, add my organic lemon juice + sprinkle in the cayenne + stir!

Please feel free to shoot me anymore question you may have!
