ON SHROOMS // Mushroom Coffee

Hi bb’s!!!!! HAPPY MONDAY!!!!!! I just worked out and I feel so so good.. I love starting out my week with an early Monday morning workout!! I just really feel like it sets the tone for my day and for me week. Speaking of setting the tone for the day: today I want to talk about MUSHROOM COFFEE because it has totally changed the way I start my day! If you follow me on…. wait wait wait… lol I just realized I start off nearly every blog post with “if you follow me on Instagram then you know ______” but the truth is I get most of my inspiration from YOU GUYS asking me question on Instagram sooooooo here we go again 😉 If you follow me on Instagram then you know my obsession with Four Sigmatic and their mushroom coffee!!! The obsession started in May 2018 and I have been going strong ever since! I didn’t even really mean to make the switch (although I am really glad I did) but after a weekend away in Joshua Tree with only mushroom coffee to drink I realized how much better I feel drinking less regular coffee and drinking mushroom coffee on the reg instead!!

Ok, so you’re probably thinking that this switch was easy for me, or that I wasn’t really a hardcore coffee drinker so let me give you some back story: I didn’t really get into coffee until I was in my 20’s, but even then I was always the type of coffee drinker that could have one randomly and then be fine without it for long periods of time; I was never addicted to it or felt like I “needed it”… that is until I started working a night job in addition to my day time endeavors and began to heavily rely on it to function. Mid way through my 5 year “bottle service career” (it was hardly a career but you know what I mean lol) it became very apparent that I was 100% addicted to coffee.

It started out as a one cup in the morning to wake myself up after a long night of working until 3:00am kinda thing, and then it turned into needing another one in the evening as well before I would head off to work again at 10:00pm.. but over time as my adrenals started to fatigue and my body started to break down I went from needing 2 cups a day to maybe 4-6 cups a day.. and honestly I don’t even know how much I was actually drinking because I wouldn’t even keep track. All I knew was that my brain could not function, I was tired all of the time and coffee was my crutch that seemed to help me manage my insane schedule. But the longer I went on like this the less and less the coffee worked, my body became immune to it!! I could have like 6 shots of espresso over ice (that was my usual drink of choice lol) and FEEL NOTHING.. but then… then I started to experience severe anxiety, irritability, headaches, my skin was breaking out and I was stuck in a never ending cycle of a 30 minute caffeine high followed by a dramatic crash and I wasn’t even getting any good focus time while drinking it- I was only just able to moderately function! I was either moderately functioning or a complete zombie.. I didn’t realize it at the time but this was the beginning of my adrenal fatigue. I was literally making myself sick with my schedule (also working in an environment I hated did not help) coupled with the insane amount of coffee I was drinking. I know there are apparently some benefits to drinking coffee, but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing; and at the end of the day coffee is a stimulant – coffee gets your adrenaline pumping, and too much of it literally drains your adrenals putting your body in a state of stress. YIKES! Stress stress and more stress.. no wonder I felt like sh*t, my whole entire life was full of stress from my job, to my relationships, to my living environment to the drinks I was putting in my body; can you say cortisol overload? Ugh. It kills me to think about it now because I really didn’t see what I was doing, I was just doing what I thought I needed to do and was willing to do whatever it took to get the job done, even if it meant running myself ragged. There were tons of red flags along the way but I ignored them and chalked them up to random symptoms that were not that serious.. oh well. It’s over now.. all I can do is heal my body and be more in tune with the signs it gives me from here on out.

I cut out regular coffee completely for about 3 months and only recently started to have one here and there like I used to (ironically I am drinking one now haha because I am working from a coffee shop).. but it’s VERY VERY RARE. I also try to avoid drinking cold coffee per my acupuncturists recommendation and I usually do not have it first thing in the morning, I try to wait until mid morning if I am going to have it and after a warm meal. But like I said.. me having regular coffee is very rare because I truly just prefer mushroom coffee! I feel so much better overall and it tastes just like regular coffee.. plus I love the instant packets because they are perfect for traveling and just so simple- all I have to do is add hot water (I add a little toffee stevia) and I’m good to go! I can drink it at any time too because there is as much caffeine in it as a cup of decaf coffee has!

Here are some of the benefits I have noticed by making the switch:

DECREASED ANXIETY: My anxiety is basically non-existent since cutting back on coffee

BETTER FOCUS: I am able to actually focus whereas before on regular coffee I would feel jittery and all over the place.

BETTER SLEEP: I fall asleep much easier than before and I wake up with more energy now!

BALANCED ENERGY LEVELS: I feel like I have WAY better natural energy levels now than I ever did drinking regular coffee on the reg!

BALANCED ADRENAL GLANDS & HORMONES: less cortisol, less stress, less anxiety = better balanced body and mind!

So now do you see why I love mushroom coffee?? It is seriously SO GOOD!! I linked my favorite here so you can try it out for yourself!!

Hi Shayla! I love all your posts so much and I appreciated your vulnerability on your first IGTV post! As far as coffee goes, I would like to say I’m not dependent on it because I don’t get headaches with out it haha and I’ll usually have one day of the week without it, but I have never consistently taken coffee out of my routine and mushroom coffee seems like a great alternative to try. I’ve also tried matcha to replace it as well, but I just haven’t gotten down making it very well at home lol. Thanks for sharing about how much mushroom coffee has improved your routine and thanks for always keepin it real girl

    • Shayla Quinn says:

Hi Cassie!!! Thank you for entering the giveaway!!! And thank you thank you than you for your love and support xoxox I know what you mean about the matcha thing- I’m always like YEAHHHH MATCHA AT HOME IS A GREAT IDEA but I feel like so much goes into making that I never end up making it!! But thats why I love mushroom coffee… it’s so easy and quick! Yay!

    • Shayla Quinn says:

also- whats your IG handle?! xoxox

  2. Kerri Kiesendahl says:

I am sensitive to lots of caffeine so I enjoy a coffee infused with other herbs. I really want to try mushroom coffee!

  3. Chloe VP says:

I absolutely LOVE this stuff! It is so good, especially the spicy one (forget what it is called)

  4. Shelby Carlson says:

Wow! Thanks for posting this, I’m very intrigued! I’ve never tried mushroom coffee, I’m usually just a regular coffee drinker. My experience with coffee has started out slow because I’ve only started drinking it for about a year now! Otherwise I’ll do a superfood smoothie with maca.

  5. Chantal Spooner says:

I have never been a coffee drinker but recently started drinking iced coffee. I have tried the mushroom coffee and I must say I’m starting to come to the dark side with all the coffee drinkers! Would love to be able to try more of their items too ???? (insta handle:chantalcroucher)

    Thanks for the opportunity.

  6. Kristen Dubahyou says:

Always been a big coffee drinker, but once I tried this coffee; it instantly became my new favorite! Seriously boosts my mood and makes me feel 10x better! ???? I like to drink it black, or sometimes with a little bit of almond milk????✨ (ig: thehealthyhipstah)

  7. Sarah says:

This is so eye opening! I too went from a bit of coffee here and there to becoming completely dependent on it once I went to graduate school. I struggle so much with anxiety and I know my current coffee habits are not helping my zen! I cannot wait to try out the mushroom coffee. You got me super psyched about it! Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I’m always looking for ways to treat my body better! 🙂

  8. Ali Hirshan says:

    Hi there!
Thanks so much for sharing. I have always been on and off with coffee, worried about it’s negative side affects. I’ve cycled it in and out and gotten on a matcha kick or two, but I truly do love the taste of coffee! When I tried foursigmatic coffee for the first time I was pleasantly surprised how good the taste was. Of course I slowly got totally addicted to their mushroom coffee with lions mane! Such awesome benefits, also without the “crash” of typical coffee. Thanks again for your post 🙂

  9. kcherv says:

Really love this stuff and so convenient for on the go

  10. Hannah R. says:

Hey! Thank you for sharing your experience. I’ve gone through ups + downs with my relationship with coffee, but I’ll 100% be the first to admit that I do have an emotional attachment to it. It’s not so much about how it makes me feel physically (although that’s part of it), but rather the whole ritual involved – I love the measuring out the beans, heating the water over the stove, pouring into my french press, steeping for 10 mins, etc. However, as i much as I LOVE it I do sometimes notice a shaky/uneasy feeling followed by a crash later on. As much as I’m aware of this, I still have no intentions of giving up coffee (LOL) . I’d absolutely love to try the Four Sigmatic coffee sampler to see if I feel any sort of a difference in anxiety/shakiness/crashing. Again, thanks for sharing your journey!

love how much information you give!! have been waiting to try this brand as i’ve been traveling around but i’m finally settled and want to incorporate this into my daily routine 🙂 thanks for the info! ????????????

  12. Ava moses says:

I love my morning coffee. Although I love mushroom teas, I was hesitant to try mushroom coffee because I am very particular about the taste of my coffee. However, I tried it and it tastes great!!! All coffee connoisseurs should definitely give it a try.

  13. Kaleigh A says:

I don’t even know if I can enter this because I’m from Canada but I’m gonna join the coffee talk anyway;)
Can totally relate about getting addicted to coffee, it was bad for me when I was in school but now I can do a cup in the of morning and feel like it tides me over but I always feel a crash around like 3/4 o’clock. Loved all your info about the mushroom coffee!! I’ve tried it once before and it was really delicious, you wouldn’t really expect it but it was really good!!
I dig the idea of having better sleeps and less anxiety woohoo!!!
Thanks Shayla for your awesome content, I love following you! Sending good vibes from Canada!

  14. Haley L says:

I never drank coffee until college, and then I had to have some in my afternoon classes to stay awake. I always got very sugary iced coffee because I thought the sugar would help keep awake! Then my second summer of college I worked outside of Glacier National Park as a housekeeper- between being on my feet all day, training for division I cross country, and hiking in my spare time, I NEEDED coffee to keep me sane. That’s when I started likening hot coffee for the warm rich taste and feeling! Since then I’ve been experimenting more- especially when I went to New Zealand in June where they’re kind of coffee snobs 🙂 however my favorite coffee is definitely four stigmatic. Not only do I love the warm taste with some added cinnamon and almond milk, but it totally is functional. Cordycep coffee helped me not get burnt out my second summer as a housekeeper and I swear the adaptogen coffee got me through graduation.

  15. kcherv says:

I have also noticed that it’s easy to get carried away and drink too much coffee. This coffee is very convenient and I truly enjoy the taste and the feeling rather than drinking solely for caffeine

  16. Amber McDonald says:

I have been a coffee lover for a song as I can remember.. the warmth and taste made me feel a sense of calm and happiness. About two years ago I noticed some changes.. I would get very jittery, wouldn’t be able to sleep well, and my stomach was off.. I had to commit to cutting my coffee consumption. I am not down to one regular and maybe one cup of decaf daily.. I miss the warm comforting feeling throughout the day as I am still striving to lower my consumption to improve my health.

  17. Nafeeza Chung says:

My experience with regular coffee has been good. I’m open to trying new ones

  18. Katie McMullen says:

I have been drinking coffee for as long as I can remember. I developed HORRIBLE acid reflux and had to switch to tea for many years. Fortunately, with a healthier diet I was able to reintroduce coffee back into my daily life. Truthfully, I have never experienced any extreme benefit from regular coffee, I just enjoyed it. A few months ago I received a sample of Four Sigmatic from Switch Grocery and felt INCREDIBLE. I can’t say enough good things from this brand. Delicious and provides benefits you can see after your first cup.

  19. Liliana Lee says:

This is seriously what I need!!! I’ve been having to wake up early because of my baby and now my 4yr old will be starting school and it’s been so hard for me to “wake” up and get moving! I’m dying to try this coffee!!!

  20. Jamie Jarvis says:

Girl, your post was like reading my life ????

  21. Natalia says:

Aaaaah favorite brand and giveaway! ???? I cut out coffee, ever since I got back from LA. I don’t really miss the caffeine but the taste!! I love having my morning coffee or even during the day! I‘m now obsessed with this mushroom coffee and got myself a little sample set to try them all. Well, they‘re almost gone now. I really love the cordyceps in the morning and the reishi elixir in the evening. And although I‘m not a fan of hot chocolate, I‘m la la loooving their hot chocolate with Reishi. So so good! Which one’s your fave? Thanks for this giveaway and even more for this helpful and interesting blog post! I just love you! ????????????

  22. Isabel says:

I kind of miss coffee. I stopped drinking coffee 4-5 months ago. I didn’t like the after-crash I felt or sometimes I had to drink more coffee during the day to feel energetic and focused. I also didn’t want to become dependent on coffee to get me through my day. I have gotten a sampler box from Four Sigmatic and I tired the mushroom coffee—I couldn’t believe how good it tasted and it has so much good healthy benefits with no side effects. I need to switch to mushroom coffee ASAP! Now I can drink coffee again without having to feel guilty.

  23. Linda ramirez says:

I love the smell of coffee, always have. It’s honestly one of the best smells in the world! And I didn’t use to drink it when I was young but as I got older, I learned to appreciate simple black coffee and that’s all I drink nowadays, but when I saw this mushroom coffee I thought I have to try it and I did try the Chaga and was surprised to find i liked it a lot!

  24. Marte says:

I just started intermittent fasting and I love coffee but I have a hard time drinking it black! Wanting to try this for all the extra benefits!

  25. María Del Mar says:

Hi Shayla! I also experienced those crashes moments after coffee. In med school I used to drink too much coffee and then all of the sudden I couldn’t feel it was helpful or boosting my energy, so I had to take a step back! Now I drink 2 cups a day, and would love to try the mushroom blend soon. I need to take good care of myself and my body. Hugs♡ Maria

  26. Casey Miller says:

So excited to try this adaptogen coffee!! I know I need something to stabilize the adrenal release from regular coffee. Can’t wait to feel the difference.

  27. Olivia Wilson says:

I’ve always wanted to try this stuff! Coffee gets me out of bed in the morning, especially when I have class early. But due to the acidity in coffee, I’ve been looking for an alternative. On a college student budget, I haven’t splurged on this yet. I would love to try it!

  28. Kristen Masincup says:

This sounds really neat! I usually just drink one cup of regular black coffee each morning. It doesn’t do much for me other than give me that warm fuzzy comfy cozy morning feeling. I like the taste, too. I have a superfood shake with adaptogens in it that I drink each day too—now with that, I feel amazing after. Really curious to try the coffee with adaptogens! I’m very conscientious of what I put in my body; would be interested to add this in instead of just plain coffee.

  29. Norma Ochoa says:

A cup of coffee starts my day off just right and helps me kickstart my energy. I don’t have more than one cup because I am a little sensitive to caffeine.
